A landmark event for the Cape Flats unfolded in Athlone with the opening of Gatesville Medical Centre, making affordable private healthcare a reality for the community.
Melomed expanded its reach to the Cape Flats in 1997 with the acquisition of a hospital in Mitchells Plain. This facility, now licensed for 132 beds, continues to serve the community. In 2009, Melomed Mitchells Plain made history by opening the first in-house renal care unit on the Cape Flats, offering vital dialysis services to patients.
In 2004, Melomed took a significant step forward by acquiring Jan S Marais Hospital, a leading private institution. To provide the community with the most advanced care, the decision was made to relocate the hospital to a brand-new, multi-disciplinary facility in 2009. This state-of-the-art building offered a wider range of services under one roof.
Land acquired on Corner of Voortrekker Road & AJ West Street to develop Melomed Bellville Hospital.
Establishment of Melomed Renal Care – The first renal unit on the Cape Flats opens at Melomed Mitchells Plain.

This state-of-the-art facility, boasting 148 beds and spanning a spacious 10,000 square meters on the corner of Keyser and Main Roads in Tokai, offers a comprehensive range of medical services.
Melomed extended its national footprint in 2018 with the grand opening of a 192-bed facility in Richards Bay, KwaZulu-Natal. This ultramodern hospital boasts a convenient location near the N2, making it easily accessible to communities in both Empangeni and Richards Bay.
Melomed Gatesville celebrates 30 years.
Melomed Gatesville awarded the honour of being the only private hospital to administer Covid-19 vaccinations for healthcare professionals.
