Melomed Tokai

Melomed Tokai

The hospital is built on a 17 000m² stand on the corner of Main and Keysers Roads in Tokai. Traffic congestion, ease-of access and ample parking were taken into account in the design the facility. The R400-million hospital boasts a complement of 157 beds, including adult medical beds, surgical beds, an intensive care unit, a high care unit, Neonatal ICU beds and Paediatric beds. The hospital has four operating theatres, a dedicated obstetric theatre, a scope room, as well as other theatres. It has also introduced the first cardiac intervention unit to the Southern Peninsula with a state-of-the-art Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) that caters for Cardio, Neuro and Vascular procedures and interventions. The hospital has built specialised isolation units with sluices in between the wards to prevent the spread of infection. The surgical experts at Melomed Tokai includes disciplines such as major Orthopaedics, Obstetrics and Gynaecology, ENT Surgery, Ophthalmology, Neurology and Neurosurgery, Urology, General and Vascular surgery with super speciality services offered inclusive of a Surgical Gastroenterology and Hepatobiliary Service. Melomed Tokai houses permanent resident specialists who provide the surrounding community with access to a broad range of medical services including Neonatology and Haematology but to name a few. The hospital has a dedicated endoscopy suite as well as an advanced oncology bunker for future radium therapy and treatment to mention just a few extension services that will be offered at the facility. The advanced medical and surgical equipment places Melomed Tokai in line with the latest advances in medical technology innovations. The hospital was built with a focus on the free flow of patient, staff and visitor movement, as well as the close proximity of related units such as the ICU being near operating theatres and the maternity ward neighbouring the obstetric theatre, labour ward, post-natal ward, neo-natal ICU, paediatric ward and paediatric ICU. The hospital has a dedicated 24-hour emergency unit with its own dedicated entrance for ambulances, which is undercover, allowing patients to be admitted without entering the main hospital entrance or being affected by weather conditions. Patients have easy access to the Renal Unit off the patient parking area via the hospital reception area on the ground floor which is wheelchair friendly, while the Oncology Unit, on the fifth floor, was designed to be spacious and provide relaxing and therapeutic views of the Cape Peninsula for patients undergoing therapy. Also on the fifth floor is the Clinical Haematology unit which includes the Cryopreservation room, stem cell transplant and harvesting service.
