SOD has been turned and construction has officially begun on the Melomed Richards Bay Hospital at John Ross Eco Junction.
At a glitzy event on Thursday evening, government officials and executive members of the private companies driving the project celebrated the major investment.
The hospital will serve patients from the entire region, alleviating bed shortages at existing private hospitals.
'Today we celebrate,' said Ahmed Chohan, COO of Melomed Hospital Holdings.
'But as we celebrate, we know that these 100 beds will not be enough.
'And when the time comes, we will invite you all back to see what we have accomplished.'
Chohan elaborated that the company will apply for more beds almost immediately.
'The Liberty Group has a deep passion for property - not only because of its investment returns and bricks and mortar, but for the difference that it makes to people and the communities it serves.
'This new Melomed Hospital development is a true testimony to that,' said Head of Stanlib Property Investments, Amelia Beattie,
KZN Premier Senzo Mchunu congratulated the women-led team of Tuscaloosa, hailing them for their perseverance and initiative.
Construction of the 10 000 square metre hospital is expected to be completed by end of 2017.
